Brad Pitt was at Angelina Jolie's side as she gave birth to a son and daughter Saturday at the Fondation Lenval hospital in Nice, France, PEOPLE has confirmed.
"The babies are doing well. The operation went just perfectly," Dr. Michel Sussmann told PEOPLE Sunday. "Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. He was there and all was well."
Sussmann confirmed the Nice-Matin newspaper report that Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Cesarean section on Saturday night. Knox weighed 5.03 lbs, and Vivienne 5 lbs.
The twins are the fifth and sixth children for Jolie, 33, and partner Brad Pitt, 44, who are already parents to Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2.
"The mother and father are very, very happy," Sussmann told PEOPLE.
The doctor told the Associated Press that the Cesarean was moved forward "for medical reasons" so that the babies could be born "in the best conditions." He also said Jolie is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days.
On July 1, Jolie checked in to the Fondation Lenval hospital to await the births. The family has been living in the south of France since this spring.Jolie recently told Entertainment Weekly that she was surprised – but not daunted – when she learned she was having twins. "It did shock us, and we jumped to six [children] quickly," she said. "But we like a challenge."

Angelina Jolie is considering adopting another child, less than two weeks after checking into a hospital to prepare for the birth of her twins, according to reports.

Heavily pregnant Jolie checked herself into a Nice, France hospital on 29 June (08) - where she will remain until her babies, with partner Brad Pitt, are born.

The expected additions will be the fifth and sixth children for the couple - who are allegedly on a mission to add a seventh member to their family.

According to reports, the pair was so moved by the plights of children orphaned by May's (08) devastating earthquake in China, they want to adopt a child from the region.

A source tells the National Enquirer, "Even as the birth of their twins impended, Angie and Brad were already talking adoption again. She's devastated over the earthquake that occurred in China, she has been in constant touch with relief workers as part of her U.N. involvement - and even got her hands on photos of a few orphaned kids.

"She's made overtures to offer a home to one, or even two China earthquake orphans, if they're siblings".

Jolie and Pitt have three adopted children, Maddox, six, Zahara, two, and Pax, four, as well as their biological two-year-old Shiloh.

Angelina Jolie has more influence than her partner Brad Pitt, according to the just-released Forbes list of 'The World's Most Powerful Celebrities'.

Jolie comes in at number 3 on the list, following list regulars Oprah Winfrey, who took the top spot for the second year in a row, and golfer Tiger Woods who appears at number two. Pitt makes the list at number 10.

The annual list, compiled by Forbes magazine, ranks the world's most powerful - and best-paid - celebrities. To create the list, Forbes uses estimates of a star's earnings, then factors in media metrics like Google hits, press mentions and the number of times an A-lister appears on the cover of more than 50 consumer magazines.

Another entertainment power couple, singer Beyonce Knowles and rapper Jay-Z, appear in the top 10, with Knowles also flying the flag for girl-power at number 4 while husband ranks at number 7.

With a year that featured a smash hit movie and a questionable appearance half naked on the cover of Vanity Fair, its no surprise tween star Miley Cyrus made her debut on the list at number 35.

Other newcomers include The Hills star Lauren Conrad (#97), Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker (#72), Zac Efron (#92) and singer/designer Gwen Stefani (#63).

A source close to the Jolie-Pitt family told OK magazine: “It took her a while, but now she’s as excited as the rest of the family.

"Like any grandma, Jane will make comments about how the kids act or how they're dressed.  They're not meant as judgments, but Angelina thinks she's questioning her mothering skills," the source spilled to the weekly entertainment magazine.
According to the report from Star, all of his head-butting between his mom and Angelina has really put Brad, 44, in a tough spot.  Although he had promised Angelina he would dissuade his family from coming to France until after the twins' birth, the insider says Jane has gone ahead and made plans to arrive soon - all without Angelina's knowledge.
If Angelina ends up not getting her way in this Pitt family feud, she already has a back up plan.  According to the source, that's the reason she and Brad have been staying at their friend Paul Allen's 10-bedroom mansion in the South of France - so Angelina will hardly see the Pitts!
"They'll have their own wing, so she'll have to interact with them as little as possible," says the source.  "There's plenty of space where they can hang out - away from Angie."

ANGELINA JOLIE has fuelled rumours she's planning to give birth to her second natural child in France after moving into Microsoft co-founder PAUL ALLEN's villa in St Jean Cap Ferrat for the summer (08).
Local reports suggest the actress, her partner Brad Pitt and their four children flew to nearby Nice, France on Monday (28Apr08) and they plan to stay at Allen's secluded home for "a long duration." Two nannies and three bodyguards joined the family at Villa Maryland.

The couple is expected to remain in St Jean Cap Ferrat at least until the end of the Cannes Film Festival on 25 May (08).

BRAD Pitt and Angelina Jolie are planning a secret summer wedding and the event could lead to a reconciliation between Angelina and her estranged actor father Jon Voight.

A famously private couple, Brad and Angelina have shunned a big celebrity-packed affair for an intimate and non-religious ceremony at their retreat in Santa Barbara in early June, with only close family and friends present, reports the UK's Daily Mail.

And it is understood Jolie has handed her father an olive branch and asked him to walk her down the aisle.

"Since they started talking by phone in January, Angie has thought about asking Jon to give her away," a friend says.

"When Angie and Brad started seriously discussing a wedding, the issue of Angie reconciling with her dad came up again and again.
