Before dawn Saturday, the Hollywood superstar and her newborn twins left the French Riviera hospital where she gave birth a week ago, the hospital said in a statement.
"The mother and her babies are doing very well," reported the Fondation Lenval hospital in the southern Mediterranean city of Nice.
Jolie slipped out at 4 a.m. Saturday with the twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt, deftly evading most of the paparazzi who have followed the family for months in southern France, ever since Jolie arrived for the Cannes film festival in May. It was not clear if the twins' father, actor Brad Pitt, was with them.
Jolie, 33, checked into the hospital on July 2 and delivered the babies by Caesarean section ten days later. Knox Leon weighed 5.03 pounds and Vivienne Marcheline 5 pounds.
Jolie's obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann, told reporters after the birth that the 44-year-old Pitt was at Jolie's side during the delivery, which he said had been pushed up from its originally planned date "for medical reasons" so the babies could be born "in the best conditions."

"Angelina wants a very strong input," a source tells Britain's The Mail. "She wouldn’t want a fragrance that she didn’t feel encapsulates her."
Having a perfume line has proven to be a lucrative endeavor for many celebrities. Other stars who have their own super-successful perfumes include Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani.
Given Jolie's unrivaled star power today, it's likely her fragrances will rake in tons of cash. The venture would enable Jolie to continue supporting her many charitable causes. Jolie, 33, is a U.N. Ambassador who reportedly donates one-third of her income to charity.
Angie, a mom of four, is expecting fraternal twins with partner Brad Pitt, 44, this summer. In addition to the blockbuster animated film, Kung Fu Panda (which is in theaters now), Jolie has a movie coming out June 27: the action thriller, Wanted, in which she portrays an assassin.
For those who criticize her decision to play a vigilante, Jolie says, "The idea behind Wanted is not that she's a bad-ass assassin that just likes to kill people. It's that, if you ran into Hitler before he did everything, and you knew, should you shoot him? I would. These assassins are getting lists: They find out who is going to slaughter other people ahead of time and they remove them."
Jolie—who says she wouldn't hesitate to shoot anyone who tries to harm her kids—adds: "It is a confusing thing, certainly for rights activists. Don't read too much into it. I am holding a gun, but there are so many people that have done so many horrible things."
Angelina Jolie is considering adopting another child, less than two weeks after checking into a hospital to prepare for the birth of her twins, according to reports.
Heavily pregnant Jolie checked herself into a Nice, France hospital on 29 June (08) - where she will remain until her babies, with partner Brad Pitt, are born.
The expected additions will be the fifth and sixth children for the couple - who are allegedly on a mission to add a seventh member to their family.
According to reports, the pair was so moved by the plights of children orphaned by May's (08) devastating earthquake in China, they want to adopt a child from the region.
A source tells the National Enquirer, "Even as the birth of their twins impended, Angie and Brad were already talking adoption again. She's devastated over the earthquake that occurred in China, she has been in constant touch with relief workers as part of her U.N. involvement - and even got her hands on photos of a few orphaned kids.
"She's made overtures to offer a home to one, or even two China earthquake orphans, if they're siblings".
Jolie and Pitt have three adopted children, Maddox, six, Zahara, two, and Pax, four, as well as their biological two-year-old Shiloh.
"The babies are doing well. The operation went just perfectly," Dr. Michel Sussmann told PEOPLE Sunday. "Angelina is in very good spirits. Brad Pitt was at her side. He was there and all was well."
Sussmann confirmed the Nice-Matin newspaper report that Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Cesarean section on Saturday night. Knox weighed 5.03 lbs, and Vivienne 5 lbs.
The twins are the fifth and sixth children for Jolie, 33, and partner Brad Pitt, 44, who are already parents to Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2.
"The mother and father are very, very happy," Sussmann told PEOPLE.
The doctor told the Associated Press that the Cesarean was moved forward "for medical reasons" so that the babies could be born "in the best conditions." He also said Jolie is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days.
On July 1, Jolie checked in to the Fondation Lenval hospital to await the births. The family has been living in the south of France since this spring.Jolie recently told Entertainment Weekly that she was surprised – but not daunted – when she learned she was having twins. "It did shock us, and we jumped to six [children] quickly," she said. "But we like a challenge."

According to a new report, Angelina Jolie will give birth to the Wonder Twins by C-section on Tuesday.
A source reports, “She can't wait to give birth because she can't stand the hospital food, and she is fed up to be in this hospital room. If she could be induced earlier she would love it, but the medical team think it's medically better to wait until next Tuesday.”
Exciting!

She is a patient like any other … very simple and for whom I have a great deal of respect.”In Nice, France the talk of the town is Angelina giving birth. According to Doctor Michel Sussman, Jolie’s doctor in French Riviera hospital, actress is doing well and is expected to give birth to twins in the coming weeks.
During a brief news conference Doctor Sussmann gave few details away but declined to response to a question concerning the sex of the expected babies or the likely birth date. Sussmann told reporters at the Lenval hospital:
What she needs now is simple surveillance by monitoring to ensure the good health of her babies in the weeks to come.”Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have arrived to the hospital on Sunday by helicopter and have bodyguards secure their suite.
Doctor Sussman added:
Mrs. Angelina Jolie and … Mr. Brad Pitt, told me to let you know that she is doing just fine at the moment. The greatest celebrity couple also are the parents of three adopted children - daughter Zahara from Ethiopia, son Pax from Vietnam and son Maddox from Cambodia, and have one biological daughter together, Shiloh, who was delivered by Caesarean section two years ago in the African country of Namibia.
This is the reason why Miss Jolie is so early in the hospital, she needs the post C-section check up.
Good luck and take care, Angie.
Jolie comes in at number 3 on the list, following list regulars Oprah Winfrey, who took the top spot for the second year in a row, and golfer Tiger Woods who appears at number two. Pitt makes the list at number 10.
The annual list, compiled by Forbes magazine, ranks the world's most powerful - and best-paid - celebrities. To create the list, Forbes uses estimates of a star's earnings, then factors in media metrics like Google hits, press mentions and the number of times an A-lister appears on the cover of more than 50 consumer magazines.
Another entertainment power couple, singer Beyonce Knowles and rapper Jay-Z, appear in the top 10, with Knowles also flying the flag for girl-power at number 4 while husband ranks at number 7.
With a year that featured a smash hit movie and a questionable appearance half naked on the cover of Vanity Fair, its no surprise tween star Miley Cyrus made her debut on the list at number 35.
Other newcomers include The Hills star Lauren Conrad (#97), Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker (#72), Zac Efron (#92) and singer/designer Gwen Stefani (#63).

“She puts her hands on Angie’s stomach to feel the twins kick and she jumps back and starts grinning!”
The source added that Shiloh is preparing to take to her big sister duties seriously and is pushing forward with her own development: “She’s got her pull-up diapers and tells Mom and Dad when she has to go to the bathroom.
“She’s trying to get the hang of it all on her own - just like she did with walking.”
Mum Angelina Jolie is expected to give birth to twins in August. The babies will be Angelina and partner Brad Pitt’s fifth and sixth children.
''Brad is the hardest person to shop for,'' she says of her partner, Brad Pitt, while checking out a window display of Corum watches at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat in the south of France. ''He has impeccable design taste. And whenever he sees something he likes, he buys it for himself.'' Pitt's most recent gift to Jolie — the gun-charm necklace she wore to her EW photo shoot — is also a tough act to follow.
''Mad, our 6-year-old, draws lots of war scenarios,'' she explains. ''He's all into war and guns. So for Mother's Day he drew a machine gun, and Brad had it made into a necklace, which is really sweet. It's really cute. I think it's really good!''
It's down to a two-horse derby -- only People and OK! are left.
How desperate are they? TMZ.com writes that the pics are so valuable they would "print blank pages" the rest of year to get them. Can a weekly mag actually recoup all that cash? Probably not, but it doesn't matter. The prestige is what counts.
A People rep says: "We'd love to see the photos in People. We wish the family well." OK!'s rep refused to address a dollar figure with TMZ, but admits it would be "foolish" not to bid.
One good thing from all this wanton spending -- the money would go to charity, as designated by parents Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
A law firm representing Ms. Jolie says that an impostor claiming to be the actress’s assistant misled some news organizations. According to Ms. Jolie’s camp, the birth report was false.
The law firm, Lavely & Singer, sent a letter of warning to roughly two dozen news media outlets on Monday.
“A random individual has engaged in a scheme to intentionally harm my client and deceive her fans, the public and the media through illegal and tortuous impersonation of Ms. Jolie’s longtime assistant, Holly,” the letter said.
After attending the world premiere of her latest movie, Angelina Jolie revealed her latest set of body art - geographical map coordinates accurately detailing the countries of birth of each member of her "rainbow family".
Walking down the red carpet in Cannes to promote her movie, A Mighty Heart, the 31-year-old actress kept the new tattoos hidden, using her boyfriend, Brad Pitt, as a human shield.
The tattoo on Angelina Jolie's left arm show's the map coordinates for the birthplaces of her children. The actress also appeared to be bruised - a common side effect of tattooing.
But as the couple made their way down the festival's famous Croisette in a chauffeur-driven car afterwards, the four-part scribing on her left shoulder was plainly visible.
"Like any grandma, Jane will make comments about how the kids act or how they're dressed. They're not meant as judgments, but Angelina thinks she's questioning her mothering skills," the source spilled to the weekly entertainment magazine.
According to the report from Star, all of his head-butting between his mom and Angelina has really put Brad, 44, in a tough spot. Although he had promised Angelina he would dissuade his family from coming to France until after the twins' birth, the insider says Jane has gone ahead and made plans to arrive soon - all without Angelina's knowledge.
If Angelina ends up not getting her way in this Pitt family feud, she already has a back up plan. According to the source, that's the reason she and Brad have been staying at their friend Paul Allen's 10-bedroom mansion in the South of France - so Angelina will hardly see the Pitts!
"They'll have their own wing, so she'll have to interact with them as little as possible," says the source. "There's plenty of space where they can hang out - away from Angie."
Speaking at a news conference in Cannes, Jolie revealed that the couple's kids were already learning to speak French. "It's a second language in our home," the BBC quoted her, a saying. "My children are starting to speak French, it's good for them," she added. The new additions will take the number of kids in Brangelina"s brood to 6. The couple are already parents to two boys Maddox and Pax, and two girls Zahara and Shiloh.
Marcheline Bertrand's condominium in Simi Valley was sold for $330,000 (GBP165,000) last month (Apr08), shortly before pregnant Jolie left for France with her family for an extended vacation.
Friends claim Jolie struggled to let go of the pad, which was full of memories of her mother, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in January 2007, aged 56.
An insider tells the National Enquirer, "They were incredibly close. Marcheline was an actress as well, and responsible for getting Angelina involved in film.
"She had been urged to sell the place by family and friends, but wanted to hold on to one of the last things she could touch or feel of her mother's spirit.
They add, "Finally, after more than a year, she tearfully let it go."
Unfortunately, Angelina Jolie's highly publicized antics attracted more attention than her movie roles for many years. She seemed to be more famous for having kissed her brother at the Academy Awards than for having won one. And the fact that she and Billy Bob Thornton carried around each other's blood and admitted to having wild sex every chance they had made them demigods to tabloid writers worldwide.
